spacing image WHY DO CHILDREN PLAY SPORT _

Children play sport for FUN. As coaches, we have to keep them interested in their chosen sport. Besides fun, children want to play with friends, and learn some new skills.

COACHING TIPS

  • Modified sports recognise that children differ from adults. Ensure your training is also modified and consider training areas, size of the equipment, and the length of the training.
  • Make the sport fun for children – this means no pressure from adults.
  • Use game-orientated training – kids love to play.
  • Some drills can be camouflaged by using games.
  • Add variety to your sessions.
  • Children love competing with each other, but the outcome is not the focus.
  • Avoid exercises such as full squats, throwing curved or drop balls in baseball, bouncing stretches and activities which over use one side of the body. (Children are still growing and may injure the ends of their bones, or growth plates.)
  • Have all injuries treated immediately and checked by trained professionals.
  • Always use positive reinforcement – compliment the kids on their efforts.
