| Interested in coaching athletes with disabilities_ There are many
resources available to assist you. The Coaching Athletes with Disabilities
(CAD) Scheme, under the Disability
Education Program, have a range of resources that assist coaches to acquire skills
and knowledge to coach athletes with disabilities. In addition, there are state
coordinators of the Disability Education Program who can provide further information and
assistance if required. They also have a program of Level 1 CAD courses that run
throughout the year in your state or territory. Coaching athletes with a disability is fundamentally no different to coaching athletes without disabilities. There are very few disabilities or medical conditions which completely preclude participation in sport. Athletes with a disability play sport for much the same reasons as athletes without disabilities. They want to improve fitness, develop new skills, increase social contacts and have the chance to achieve and receive recognition. Census figures from 1991 reveal that as many as 18% of Australians have a disability, yet it is estimated that less than 2% participate in organised sport. You can help increase the number of people with disabilities taking part in sport. Provided the coach is prepared to accept each participant as an individual, coaching an athlete with a disability is not a difficult task. Every athlete is unique. Effective coaches adjust to accommodate individual needs. For more information on this topic see:
