The following are some "Frequently Asked Questions" about Coaching and associated topics.  They are divided into a range of topics, including:

Coaching Courses

  • Who do I contact to do a coaching course_

There are over 90 sports with courses approved under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme. Your national sporting association is responsible for the management of these courses. State and regional associations, or sometimes local clubs run the courses. To find out what courses are run by your sport you will need to contact your national or state sporting association. Use this link to access a directory of sporting associations

Your State Coaching and Officiating Centre (usually housed within your State Department of Sport and Recreation), and Sport Education Agencies also run topical coaching courses. Use this link to contact your State Coaching and Officiating Centre or Sport Education Agency to find out what courses they are currently offering

  • Who do I contact to do the Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching principles course_

State Coaching and Officiating Centres and Sport Education Agencies are registered with the Sport Education Section of the Australian Sports Commission to conduct Level 1 and 2 Coaching Principle courses and Officiating Principles courses. Use the following link to contact your State Coaching and Officiating Centre or Sport Education Agency to find out what courses they are currently offering

Remember that a Coaching Principles Course is just one component of accreditation within the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS). You will need to contact your National Sporting Organisation to find out the other requirements for NCAS accreditation within your sport.

  • I have just been named as coach of my child basketball team. Can you send me information on coaching children_

It is important that all junior coaches are appropriately qualified and can provide quality sporting experiences for kids. Good coaching will lead to good experiences in sport and can help to encourage life long habits of physical activity.

You should contact your National Sporting Organisation  to find out more about the courses they offer for junior coaches.

The Australian Sports Commission also produces a number of publications on coaching and children in sport. Use the following link to view the Australian Sports Commission’s Publications Services Section’s on-line catalogue.

You will also find further information about junior sport on the Active Australia Website

  • I am interested in furthering my coaching, can you suggest any courses or ongoing education that I could undertake_

The National Coaching Accreditation Scheme is a progressive educational scheme for sports coaches with courses from Level 1 (club level) through to Level 3 (elite level) available in most sports. You should contact your sporting association for more information on the higher level courses that they offer. You may also find that they offer short ‘updating’ courses on topical coaching issues.

State Coaching and Officiating Centres also conduct ‘updating’ courses . Use the following link to obtain the contact details for your State Coaching and Officiating Centre.

  • How old do I have to be before I can do a coaching course_

The Australian Sports Commission recommends 16 years of age as the minimum age for accreditation with in the NCAS. However, some National Sporting Organisations have chosen to adopt slightly older or younger ages as the minimum age for their sport if they feel it is appropriate (eg some sports require 18 years, and others, 15 years).
