Female athletes respond to training and exercise with the same physiological adjustments as their male counterparts and can cope extremely well with intense training and with no greater risks to their health than males.

COACHING TIPS

  • Avoid sex-typing of activities, (encourage a model of equal opportunity)
  • Encourage and nuture independence on the coach
  • Provide challenging goals
  • Ensure training sessions are planned and include variety
  • Provide suitable role models
  • Female athletes need more iron and calcium
  • During pregnancy the intensity of training should be appropriately modified.
