spacing image Whether you are an amateur or professional coach, you need to be able to defend yourself against any legal action arising from your coaching.

A coach is at risk of litigation from:

  • athlete injury
  • inappropriate training programs
  • libel and slander
  • assault
  • athlete selection
  • administration of first aid
  • food or drink poisoning
  • inadequate supervision
  • inadequate tuition/advice on likely risks in sport
  • failure to ensure facilities and equipment are safe

You insure you house, contents and car, yet legal action could place the same assets at risk.

The Australian Sports Commission strongly advises coaches to look at insurers that will provide you with coverage that is specifically aimed at providing comprehensive individual protection for coaches.

Cost for protection varies depending on the type and extent of coverage sought. Your insurance broker will provide quotes and coverage details.

If covered, when are you protected_

Any time you are personally providing coaching, teaching, instruction, selection and related services to sports participants in relation to the disciplines of the accredited sport for which you are insured.

A coach liability insurance policy should include the following features:

Public and products liability insurance

This covers you for legal liability for personal injury and damage to property occurring in connection with your duties as an accredited coach during the period of insurance. Public liability is usually covered up to $5,000,000 for any one occurrence and $100,000 for property in your physical or legal control. Products liability is usually covered up to $5,000,000 in total for all claims during the period of insurance. There is usually a $500 excess for each and every claim.

Errors and omissions/coaches indemnity insurance

This covers you for any claims arising from a breach of professional duty first made against you during the period of insurance and arising from acts, errors or omissions committed or allegedly committed in connection with your duties as an accredited coach. The policy benefit is usually up to $5,000,000 for any one claim and/or claims made during the period of insurance. There is usually a $500 excess for each and every claim.

Other: Policies can also be tailored to include coverage for things such as: personal accidents and assistant coaches.

Important

This is an outline of the types of typical cover provided. Policy benefits are subject to the definitions, limitations, exclusions and general provisions contained in individual policies.

Some activities may require special consideration and the insurers will reserve the right to revise premium terms and conditions at any time based on risk exposure and claims experience.
